My husband and I have four children, including our daughter Haley who passed away in 2008 after battling a brain stem tumour. I have been involved in Patient and Family Centred Care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital since 2009, initially as a volunteer on the Council, then on the broader Network, and currently as a Patient and Family Centred Care Coordinator. Much of my volunteer work involved the presentation of our family’s journey to staff and health care students, and I now coach other family members in the sharing of their own stories.
I have also had the honour of coordinating the annual Time to Remember gathering and I co-facilitate the monthly Walking with Grief support group for bereaved parents and grandparents, both through the Kids with Cancer Society.
Personally, I appreciate that this Society continues to support those families whose cancer journeys end as ours did, and I hope to bring the perspective of bereaved parents and the voice of bereaved siblings, which I have observed in my surviving children, to the Board.
