Live and silent auction:
The inspiration for the live auction items are the children themselves. They have shared with us their hopes and aspirations for the future. During the event guests will have the opportunity to bid on some outstanding live auction items which have been donated by people in our community. The successful bidders will purchase a unique experience for themselves with an added bonus—the bid will also provide an unforgettable experience for some of our children with cancer. The proceeds however, will be used for programs and services that benefit all children with cancer and their families.
The silent auction is compromised exclusively of paintings and art pieces created by our children, with guidance from some of Edmonton’s most talented artists and the support of the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.
What is a Beaded Journey?
When children are diagnosed with cancer they receive a piece of leather twine and beads that spell out their first name. As they go through their treatment, a colourful bead is added to mark each facet of their journey including: surgeries, diagnostic procedures, scans, blood transfusions, and special events. For example, they receive a red bead for blood transfusions, cream for chemotherapy treatments, and heart shape for their first day back to school, and so on. It is not unusual for a child to receive hundreds of beads throughout treatment, and often their beaded journey grows to more than twenty feet in length!
The beaded journey is one of the most powerful programs offered by the Kids with Cancer Society and the beads can often be seen displayed on IV poles or with their treasured possessions. It is a powerful testament to the courage and strength of these children.
